Cotton and linen are both plant fibers with long histories - but they feel different. A practical guide to breathability, moisture, durability, and when each one suits you better.

Your closet may already hold cotton and linen pieces, even if you rarely pause to compare them.

Fiber structure: where the differences start

Cotton comes from the seed hair of the cotton plant. It is a single-cell fiber with an irregular, rounded cross-section and a natural crimp. Linen comes from the bast of the flax plant. It is a multicellular bundle fiber with a more polygonal cross-section and a smoother, often slightly lustrous surface.

Moisture handling

  • Cotton: about 7%-8% of its own weight. It takes up moisture in a steady way that works for many everyday days.
  • Linen: about 12%-20%, typically higher than cotton. It can take up more moisture and often feels drier for longer when you sweat more.

In short: light daily activity is often well served by cotton; peak heat, humidity, or heavier sweating is where linen's moisture behavior often stands out.

Breathability and heat in warm weather

Linen's hollow fiber character and high orientation are often linked with strong air flow and heat transfer - warmth leaves the skin surface more readily, and air can move through open cloth constructions.

Cotton also breathes well in many weaves and weights. In extreme heat and humidity, linen frequently feels a step cooler - though thickness, color, and fit can change the result as much as fiber family.

Phrases like "natural air conditioning" are marketing shorthand. What we can say more carefully is that linen's structure often supports cooler wear in hot weather for many people.

Strength and durability

Linen is among the stronger common plant apparel fibers. Its wet strength is often higher than its dry strength (commonly cited around about 20% higher when wet), which helps explain why linen usually stands up well to washing and can soften with use.

Cotton is also durable for everyday wear. Wet strength is often cited as about 10%-15% higher than dry strength. Both are washable, lasting fibers when cared for well.

Linen starts strong but can show crease lines where the cloth is folded again and again. Cotton usually recovers from wrinkles more easily day to day.

Hand feel and next-to-skin comfort

Cotton is widely chosen for a soft, familiar hand. Quality cotton cloth can feel gentle against skin, which is why it suits tees and other close-to-body pieces.

Linen often has more character at first - a firmer, cooler hand. With wear and washing it usually softens. Some sensitive wearers need a short break-in period; others like that cool, textured feel from day one.

Wrinkles: who needs more ironing?

Linen has lower elastic recovery, so creases show easily and do not always fall out on their own. Visible wrinkles after a day's wear are a fiber trait, not automatically a quality flaw.
